Are smoothies good for you, and what is a healthy smoothie?
Smoothies taste great, but they can also be great for you! As with anything you make at home though, it’s tough to be sure exactly how many calories, sugar and fat you are putting in your body.
When making a healthy smoothie, you should consider what your main goal is before you pick your ingredients.
What is your goal?
- Weight loss
- Feel good
- healthy diet
Healthy smoothies can be a part of each of those.
Goal: Weight Loss
Veg it up!
Fruit is very high in sugar, yes it’s natural , but it’s still sugar and you should be careful how much you take in. Sugar is a carbohydrate and adds to the energy stores of your body, if you’re not burning that energy with excercise it will be transfered into fat and will be counter productive to your main goal. If you are aiming to loose weight, vegtables offer a great alternative to fruit and they provide many benefits on top of reduced sugar – high in vitamins, antidodies etc.
You can add whatever vegtables you like, the more the better. We would reccomend starting with the following if you’re new to vegtable smoothies:
Goal: Feel Good
If your main goal is to feel great, then you’re in luck. Put what ever you want into your smoothie, fruit or veg. Natural sugars and vitamins are great for energy boosting and leaving you feeling great.
Goal: Healthy Diet
A good balance!
Mix it up, variety is key. You should try a different fuit and veg in your smoothies to get the benefit of all the natural sugars and vitamins nature provides.
